Explaining on Instagram: "During the 1997 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the world watched in shock as the giant Barney balloon was torn apart live on national TV. 🎈💥 Strong winds whipped down the streets of New York, causing the huge purple dinosaur to swing out of control. Police and parade handlers fought to steady it, but the wind was too strong — Barney slammed into a light pole, ripped open, and deflated in a dramatic collapse that looked like a full-on cartoon tragedy. 😳🦖 Millions wa

On November 27, 1997, the Barney balloon was caught by high winds during the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, causing it to crash into a lamppost and rip open. Police officers were ultimately forced to stab and stomp on the giant, deflating balloon to get it fully to the ground and under control. Credit: DelhiTheCat | History In Pictures
